How do I fix a meter read in a prior period?

Replace a meter read recorded in a prior period with the correct meter read. If you have already auto-billed the customer, you'll also need to replace the customer's auto-billing. Errors in meter readings can lead to overbilling, underbilling, or incorrect usage tracking, which may affect both the utility provider and the customer. 

Reasons to fix a meter read in a prior period: 

  • Correct billing errors. A faulty or estimated reading may have resulted in an incorrect charge. Fixing the meter read ensures customers pay for actual usage. 

  • Customer disputes and satisfaction. Customers may notice discrepancies in their bills and request corrections. Adjusting prior period reads prevents customer complaints and potential refunds. 

  • Avoiding compounded errors. An incorrect past reading can affect future bills, causing a snowball effect of miscalculations. Adjusting the error early prevents further discrepancies in customer accounts. 

 

Common reasons for incorrect meter reads:

  • Human error during manual readings. 

  • Faulty meters that report incorrect usage. 

  • System errors in automated meter reading systems. 

  • Estimated readings that need adjustment when actual data becomes available.

Replacing a meter read in a prior period

1. Open Connect Utility Management > Meters > Correct Prior Readings/Usages.

2. Enter the Input Date.

3. Enter the Customer.

This is the customer number with the incorrect meter read.

4. Select a Service.

Choose the metered service with the incorrect meter read.

5. Verify the Meter ID.

6. Press Enter to move the cursor to the Read field.

7. Enter the Read.

Now, enter the correct meter read for the prior period.

8. Press Enter again.

The correct meter read is saved for the prior period. The routine uses the correct meter read to update the usage and amount.
