How do I troubleshoot statement amounts that don't match reconciliation list amounts?

If checks on your bank statement have different amounts than the checks on the reconciliation or checks list, use the following steps to troubleshoot the problem.

Step 1: Identify the correct amount

Determine which amount is correct.

Step 2: If the amount is correct, do this

If the amount shown on the statement is correct, you'll need to use the appropriate Caselle application to look up the transaction and enter the correct amount.

Important! Adjustments are always made in the current period.

Step 3: If the amount isn't correct, do this

If the amount shown on the reconciliation or check list is correct, do this...

First, notify the bank of the error and then ask them to correct it on the next month's statement.

Second, record the amount of the bank's correction in the Bank Adjustments field in the Reconcile Bank Accounts screen.

Third, if the bank is unwilling to correct the error, you can make an adjusting entry for the amount of the difference in the CD journal.

If the check is in the current period, use the same reference number with a different sequence number. If the check is from a prior period, use the same reference number and sequence number when you enter the adjustment in the current period.

This transaction will show up on the bank reconciliation and will need to be cleared along with the other checks and charges.

Step 4: Print the Bank Reconciliation Report

Once everything balances, you need to print the bank reconciliation report. See the help topic titled How do I print the Bank Reconciliation Report?
