Web services

In accounting software, web services are standardized interfaces that allow different software systems to communicate and exchange data over the internet or network. They act like digital messengers that enable real-time integration between systems, such as between Connect applications and a payment provider.

What web services are used for

  • APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that use specific functionality, like posting a transaction, retrieving a customer record, or exporting a general ledger update.

  • Operate over HTTP/HTTPS, making them accessible by the web.

Web services matter in accounting software:

  • Automation. Automatically sync data between systems, such as Connect applications and a payment provider or portal.

  • Integration. Connect the Connect system to a payment provider or portal.

  • Real-time updates. Push and pull data instantly, like checking the status of a vendor payment or reporting.

  • Consistency. Enforces standardized formats for data, reducing manual entry errors.
