GIS glossary

Applications

The Applications list displays the names of the applications that can use the GIS Interface. Click to select an application name, then use the options on the right side of the form to fill in the application properties.

Use this list to identify the tables and routines that use the GIS Interface:

Accounts Receivable

  • Table: Bill To.
    Routines: Inquiry, Modify Existing Customers

Animal License

  • Table: Owner

Asset Management

Business License and Business Tax Collection

Columns

In this case, a column is a field title such as longitude or latitude. Use Columns to select the columns that will send or receive the GIS information from the GIS Interface.

Important! At least one column must be selected.

Examples of GIS columns:

  • Address, City, State, Zip

  • Service Address

  • Map X Coordinate

  • Map Y Coordinate

  • Map Z Coordinate

  • Latitude

  • Longitude

Delimiter

A delimiter is a character that marks the beginning or end of a unit of data. Commonly used delimiters in export files include the comma (,), semicolon (;), and colon (:).  

Which delimiter does this import file use?

  • Use the Delimiter field to enter a character.

Interface

An interface is an application that allows other applications to share information. Use the Interface drop-down list to select the application the GIS Interface will use to find the GIS information.

What do you want to do?

  • At this time, set the Interface to Other.

Password

A password is a series of characters, numbers, and symbols to access an application, routine, or report. If the GIS Interface is password protected, use the Password field to enter it.

Note: The user name and password fields are only available when a user name and password are required by the selected interface.

Program/URL

The Program/URL is the name of the third-party GIS application (.exe), or the URL web address if the GIS application is located on the Internet that the GIS Interface will use to obtain the GIS information.

After you enter the Program/URL, click Test to confirm the link or executable file.

Test

Use Test to confirm the program or URL address. The test will use the Program/URL to make sure the GIS application will open and run correctly when a user clicks the GIS button.

Table

Table refers to the location in the application database that stores the data used by the GIS Interface. The table that you select will determine which fields are available to select in the Columns field.

User name

A user name is the name assigned to a person who will use the GIS Interface.

Note: The user name and password fields are only available when a user name and password are required by the selected interface.

Does the GIS application use a user name?

  • Yes. Use the User Name field to enter a user name.

  • No. Leave blank the User Name field.
